Top recruitment strategies: Stability, support, scale
Recruitment is vital to the success of our health distribution business. Our core focus is on processes that deliver high retention and productivity by building a stable agent base and enhancing our ability to cross-recruit.
1. Cross recruiting for success
“The volatility in the market means we can’t afford to let our agents rely on a single source of income,” says Matt Graham, SVP of Government Programs, and continues, “which is why my key strategy is to cross-recruit agents across all available Medicare Advantage (MA) carriers.” This strategy, in addition to protecting our agents from downturn, prepares them for market shifts and ultimately drives their long-term stability and growth.
2. Centering the value proposition
The foundation for this success lies in the value we offer. “It always comes down to offering a compelling value proposition. It should always start with investing in their success, which is why cutting-edge technology is so important,” says Angela Palo, Chief Operating Officer for Pinnacle Financial Services. “Implement comprehensive training, mentorship, and support to help build a clear-cut path for growth.” Transparency is equally crucial, especially regarding compensation structures, including overrides and marketing support dollars.
3. Building digital credibility
Complementary to immediate support is a long-term strategy of building genuine authority. Justin Brock, CEO of Bobby Brock Insurance, notes, “Content has been a key for us, but it’s a long-term strategy.” His agency established high demand by consistently producing helpful, educational content. He advises matching the content type to the platform—highly educational for LinkedIn and YouTube, and more niche/humorous for platforms like TikTok and Instagram—to position the agency as an indispensable resource.
Key certifications: Unlock sales and market share
Equipping agents with specialized knowledge is the direct route to increased productivity and more holistic client relationships. While essential requirements like AHIP and carrier certifications are the non-negotiable baseline, strategic certifications can dramatically expand an agent’s expertise and marketability.
“A commitment to driving business growth and client loyalty is founded on delivering an exceptional, compliant, and holistic service model,” says Angela. “This starts with professional discipline, including maintaining all required AHIP and carrier certifications, consistently attending product training, and developing a deep understanding of Medicare and Medicaid.”
Angela recommends the following certifications:
- Certified Medicare Insurance Planner (CMIP): This designation shifts the agent’s role from salesperson to specialized planner, suggesting an advanced understanding of how Medicare fits into a broader financial picture. This can lead to higher-value client relationships and critical referrals.
- Certified Financial Planner (CFP): While broader, holding a CFP opens doors to partnerships with financial planning firms and provides a comprehensive understanding of retirement issues, essential for offering holistic advice to affluent seniors.
- Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC): Demonstrating advanced knowledge across all lines of insurance, the CIC helps agents confidently expand their product portfolios to include ancillary plans like long-term care, life insurance, and final expense—a key strategy for increasing sales per client.
Justin, while noting the power of these designations, points to the immediate sales utility of specific product education. “I believe the most crucial step is simply completing the Continuing Education (CE) requirements to offer MYGA (Multi-Year Guaranteed Annuities) and FIA (Fixed Indexed Annuities).” Beyond annuities, he highly recommends the Registered Social Security Analyst (RSSA) designation, which is a powerful door opener, facilitating meaningful discussions around social security planning.
This approach helps agents build trust and client relationships without having to navigate the often more stringent marketing guidelines that surround Medicare.
